This week I installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my Vista desktop using Wubi. Wubi lets you install Ubuntu as a dual-boot option that can be uninstalled from Vista’s add/remove programs control panel widget (but why would you?).
I was considering installing Ubuntu on my Dell laptop over its existing Vista install, but stopped short because I wasn’t sure I really wanted to lose Vista. The reason I’m frustrated with Vista is that my company’s permissions policy* is blocking me from installing ANYTHING (including simple updates to existing installed programs) … so while Wubi would be perfect… if I could install it, I wouldn’t be considering it.
* And it’s messed up this way because this was an experimental Vista install (this isn’t their normal policy) and since we’re still using XP on most desktops it’s not getting fixed any time soon. Oh, and my Help Desk folks are 2000 miles away.

Well that sucks. On the bright side a fix
