My cat has no nose

3-Sep-2006

Our poor cat Mia is nearly 17 years old. Why poor? She was diagnosed with rampant skin cancer on her nose and ear. After a period of observing just how rampant the cancer was we decided to take our vet’s advice and have her operated on.

Mia is home from surgery now after four days of recuperation. We knew this wasn’t going to be Hollywood-level plastic surgery, but it’s still a shock to see her as a nose-less cat. From the right angle you can avoid seeing that half her right ear is missing and pretend she’s still sweet and cuddly looking, but her new-look snout is more than a little intimidating. Our 3 year old had some fairly serious nightmares the night after we brought her home.

This post is to remember how she used to look when she had girlish good looks. Even after a litter of 5.

A disappointing post. I was thinking “wow, a cat without a nose. I didn’t think cats had much of a nose to begin with, so I wonder how a cat without a nose would look like!?” I was fearful of the answer, but curious nonetheless. However, I’m not sure if it would be wrong of me to look at your cat as a freakshow instead of someone you care about.

Ok, we haven’t comepletely put pre-op-Mia on a pedestal… we’re trying hard not to refer to her as The Elephant Cat. She does make those gurgling noises when she was first home from hospital.

She used to scare the bejeezus out of the kids before she got a negative nose. Mr 3 used prefer to wet the bed than chance upon her on the way to the bathroom at night. Now we have no chance of correcting that behaviour for a few years.

my cat has lost his nose too, i was told

my cat has lost his nose too, i was told by the vet its because he has a cold and constantly licks his nose which wears it down (because of how tough his tongue is). it looks horrid and i can see he has difficulties breathing. could this be nose cancer like ur cat? have u got a picture of what the nose looked like to see if its similar to my cat? thankyou. x

I don't know if cancer is the problem, but here

I don’t know if cancer is the problem, but here you go. Noses and ears are pretty susceptible to skin cancer. I’ve never heard of a cat that sanded its own nose off before :-o

Here you go:

Hi Chris, chance has pointed me to this site. My cat Daniel too has a sore nose that never heals. The vet i saw said it is most likely skin cancer -due to the Australian sun. I really didn’t want him to loose his nose and waited as you have to see if it is indeed that bad. It healed to a scar for a year but for the last week it came back with a vengeance. I’m wondering how much was it to treat Mia?

Rexii, From memory it was $500 or $600 (in 2006

Chris | 10-Mar-2008

Rexii,

From memory it was $500 or $600 (in 2006 dollars) for the nose and ear, but she had some related complications which made it more expensive. That figure included 3 or 4 nights stay for post-op observation.

Rexii did you have the operation on your cats nose???

Rexii did you have the operation on your cats nose??? My cat has skin cancer on his nose too.

Rexii | 1-Jul-2008

Heya Christ thanks for the info, but the vet recommanded the nitrogen treatment as it is almost impossible to cut the nose off.

@Lori,

I went for the liquid nitrogen treatment. The vet sprays it on and it kills the cancer cells. After the op. it looked really bad for a few weeks and i got really worried. but then it all settled down and his nose is almost like how it was when he was 7, (he’s 13 now). It now wet and moist all the time =) The vet says its not a permanent solution, so he may need to redo it in a year or 2. It costs $900

Lori | 17-Jul-2008

Rexii,
Thanks for the info. I took my cat to the vet just in time. The vet was able to save most of my cats nose. He operated on my cats nose and now he has stitches. I have to go back in a week or two to make sure the operation was a success. My cat had the cancer called Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
Thanks again!

Thats great news Lori. My cat had squamous cell carcinoma too.

Rexii | 17-Jul-2008

Thats great news Lori.

My cat had squamous cell carcinoma too. Did you get the freeze treatment or did the vet had to cut parts of the nose off? My cat had this sore patch after the treatment and over the past week it has gotten worse. I think the cancer over tat area was too deep for it to be treated in one session.

Rexii, The vet just cut off the section of his nose

Lori | 12-Aug-2008

Rexii,
The vet just cut off the section of his nose that was covered with cancer, and now his nose has healed it looks really good. The only thing is they say it will probably come back in about 6 months. I hate to hear that about your cat, is doing better?
Thanks again for your help.

Rexii | 13-Aug-2008

Lori,

Wish you best of luck that he has a wonderful recovery. I just took my cat to the vet today, and unfortunately the cancer has become active again. The doc recommended the surgery to cut the nose and he’s staying over. He’ll be back home in 2 days. I cant wait to cuddle him again!

My cat, Poogie, was also diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma

Arnette | 23-Aug-2008

My cat, Poogie, was also diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of his nose. They say it was induced by being out in the sun (we found him abandoned in our rural neighborhood, he was already about 10 they say) and his nose was ulcerated at that time but the vets did not mention cancer but thought it was some kind of viral thing. Then, after it never healed, we got a biopsy. We took him to the University of Florida vet school and they removed his nose. The path report says they got it all, but they recommend having chest xray later on to be sure (squamous cell ca will metastisize there). He really did well after his surgery except his breathing did sound like “wheezing from his nose” from the swelling and mucous. Darth Vadar. It scabbed over a bit and I was worried about him getting air, but then the scab dropped of and now he has just two openings. Kinda like Michael Jackson does. He is doing great. He is just as handsome as he ever was. His profile is now flat, though. I will take a picture and upload it soon.

My cat has squamous cell carcinoma on her nose and paws and is constantly licking those areas. She also has liver disease. What I need to know, is the cancer causing her pain on the skin? Does anyone know?
