HOW TO – Bake and decorate a cake

Choo choo. All aboard the Smarties pixel-art train.

Short on cake decorating talent? Buy a packet mud cake mix from the supermarket, a packet of Smarties and some Freckles. Lay out your pixel art Smarties on a piece of paper before applying them to the iced cake. Remember to anti-alias! Adventurous Bake:ers can try Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, or Starry Night.

With apologies to the excellent Make Magazine.

    Patent idea: sub-smartie rendering.

The whole time I was making the cake I wondered how to get my Dremel involved.

I should have been sawing the Smarties into RGB phosphors and making up some LED candles with an air-pressure-based “blow” detector.

Hmm. Maybe there’s a cake-mixer bit for the Dremel. This is close…

Some inspiration for your next cake…
