[...] I have used Writely for some time infrequently. It has always looked like a good tool for collaborative document development or sophisticated end-user blog posting, but I’ve never found a time to use it for either purpose. It remains in my Googlystuff menu in the hope I’ll find a problem for it to solve but I’m not holding out a lot of hope. [...]

Ok, here's a short summary of my findings:

1. Editing and republishing seems to push the post further into the future (by 13, then 23 hours!?)

2. No support to post as "draft" so you can manually mess with the generated code.

3. Images are kept on the www.writely.com server at full size. It might be better to server-side scale ala Flickr, methinks. The image of a Galah I inserted weighed in at 500k+

4. Formating wasn't great. The look of the headings, table spacing and whatnot were different when published.

5. The editor itself seems to have a strange way of dealing with tables and whatnot. If you want to delete a cell/row/table you have to know that the little lump that grows on the rendered edges turns into an x so you can delete these things by clicking.

6. Editing in WYSIWYG and publishing to html/markdown in Wordpress = Round trip engineering is hard, mmmkay?

That said, for preparing and collaborating on simple documents completely within the Writely interface - it looks pretty good. I just don't know if I would ever want to restrict myself to the functionality of the Writely interface.

[...] With Brainsnorkel experimenting with Writely, I thought it was about time that I evaluated Ecto as I promised a month ago. [...]

It turns out to be - what you see ... is completely different than what you get.

As predicted, the generated HTML is teh suck:

It’s a simple, but clean WYSIWYMG interface. Features apparently include:

(hoping that wordpress doesn't mangle that too much...)
