Based on my completely inept policical instinct I'd wager Howard will stay for 18 months to 2 years, then arrange for the party to elect to pass the baton. Costello's whines I interpret to be his way of saying that he's going into hibernation for a year.

I expect the 2005 budget to burn some election promises and for Howard to take the flak. I think the 2007 budget will then set Peter Costello up for an 18 month run to an election, probably on the back of a cash injection from the sale of the rest of Telstra.

Howard's leadership rhetoric is interesting. "I will stay for as long as my party will support me" doesn't sound like Howard's allowing himself the rhetorical space to resign. A leadership contest might be a bit of a mess with Abbott, Costello and Turnbull all aspiring to the top job.

I was thinking Costello would take the reigns within a year for sure, but after his quiet words about wanting to spend Christmas with his kids, I suspect that Howard will stay. Stay so long as the economy continues to do well, that is.
